  1. Amanda, I find it very interesting to think that Dorothy Day would have been a young girl when Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle, was first published. I wonder whether this novel about the impact of the meatpacking industry on the immigrant population would have had a significant affect on Ms. Day’s social consciousness as she came of age.

  2. Great point! Dorothy Day actually read Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle, and inspired her to take walks along Chicago’s South Side. I am sure that being a eyewitness to the South Side’s meatpacking industry planted a seed for Dorothy Day’s later views on labor, charity, and social justice.
